Families who have children with special educational needs and disabilities are being invited to find out more about services that could help them.

Local Offer Live is a free, drop-in annual showcase event aimed at helping people find out what’s available locally for children and young people with additional needs.

This year, the event is being hosted at The Kube, Leicester Racecourse, in Oadby. It will take place from 10am-5pm on Thursday 10 November and everyone is welcome to attend. Parking is free.

Information stands from organisations including the Carers Centre, the Disabled Childrens Service, the Special Education Service and occupational therapy will be at the event, along with lots of stands from local charities, groups and specialist support providers.

Performances will be taking place throughout the day, with messy play and storytelling also on offer. In addition, this year, a special ‘Celebrating Success’ awards ceremony, starting at 11am, will highlight the achievements of young people.

Assistant city mayor for education, Cllr Elly Cutkelvin, said: “Local Offer Live highlights many of the great services on offer here in the city to support both children with special educational needs and disability-related needs, and their families and carers. It is vital that everyone is aware of the support on offer to help them through what can be a very challenging and complex system. This is a great chance to explore that wider support network and share your experiences with others in what can often be a very isolating experience.

“As well as stalls and information, it’s very exciting to be celebrating success this year by hosting an awards ceremony for children and young people to highlight and congratulate them on their achievements.”

As part of the Local Offer, online workshops will take place following on from the event. On Wednesday 16 November, workshops will cover the topics of understanding autism; understanding education, health and care plans; and preparing for adulthood. On Thursday 17 November, workshops will cover the topics of sensory education; communication strategies; and the short breaks service. Local Offer Live has been co-produced by Leicester City Council and the Leicester City Parent Carer Forum, the Big Mouth Forum of disabled young people, and Leicestershire Partnership Trust.
