Cultural Quarter venue showcases graduate talent

13/04/2010

A VENUE in the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter has launched its spring exhibition season with a showcase of emerging local artists.

The exhibition space at the LCB Depot in Rutland Street will house three exhibitions of artwork from Leicester College and De Montfort University.

The first exhibition, entitled The Yoghurt Bandits, runs from April 12 to 30, and showcases the work of eight De Montfort University fine art students, including abstract, surrealist and sculptural work.

From May 12 to 30, four of the artists in residence – De Montfort University graduates Jenny Creasy, Katie Almond, Samantha Donaldson and Kirsty Whitlock – will showcase their contemporary crafts in an exhibition entitled AIR. Their work can also been seen at www.airexhibition.co.uk

Finally, from May 24 to 28, Leicester College’s HNC photography students will showcase their work in a diverse exhibition entitled Absolute.

LCB Depot manager Peter Chandler said: “The space is available not just to students, but to other professional and soon to be professional artists and groups, although at this time of year we see a larger than usual number of applications coming from higher education students.

“It’s exciting to see the quality of work that graduating artists in the city are creating and fantastic to be able to provide an opportunity for them to show their work.”

The LCB Depot’s exhibition space has showcased the work of final year students since 2004, but recent changes mean the previous hire fee has now been scrapped in favour of applicants submitting work for consideration in a competitive process.

Artists wanting to apply for the next season of exhibitions, which start on July 1, can now apply to use the space. The deadline for applications is May 24.

For further information on applying, contact info@lcbdepot.co.uk or call 0116 261 6800.

The LCB Depot exhibition space is open to the public Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5.30pm. For more information visit www.lcbdepot.co.uk
