Local celebrities join residents in festive celebrations

A FOOTBALLING legend, an international best selling author and Leicester's City Mayor will be joining residents from the Saffron Lane area at a festive celebration event this Wednesday (Dec 12).

Alan Birchenall MBE, Sue Townsend - who were both awarded the honorary Freedom of the City in 2009 - and Peter Soulsby will be attending the event, which runs from 5pm until 8pm at The Linwood Centre, in Linwood Lane.

Sue Townsend has a significant link with the saffron Lane area, as her infamous Adrian Mole series was set in that part of the city.

The special guests will be joined by local residents and ward councillors at the event, which has been organised and supported by Near Neighbours, Leicester City Council and Leicestershire Police.

There will be lots on offer at the free event, including a chance to see Santa, international food stalls, fair ground rides, a tombola, raffle, magician, face painting, hair braiding, arts and crafts and Lazer Quest.

In addition, guests will be entertained by a Gospel choir and Southfields Brass Band.

Ward Councillor for the Freeman Ward, Elly Cutkelvin, said: "This should be a fantastic event, with lots on offer and some very special guests. Local residents and volunteers have worked really hard to organise this and I hope that lots of people pop in and get into the festive spirit."
