Group honoured for community clean up efforts

A GROUP of volunteers that have helped to clean up their local neighbourhood will be honoured with an award from the Lord Mayor of Leicester tomorrow (Feb 22).

Members of the Evington Road Neighbourhood Association (ERNA) will receive the Lord Mayor’s Honoured Citizen Award in recognition of their work to organise three community clean up days.

The group worked with the city council to hold clean up events in May, June and October - funded by the Stoneygate Ward Community Budget - which removed over eight tonnes of rubbish from local streets.

The group also helped promote the council’s bulk waste collection service to households in the area. The clean up days were paid for through the Stoneygate ward community find.

Stoneygate ward councillor Lucy Chaplin, who nominated the group for the award, said: “These clean up days were an excellent example of local residents working together and with their city wardens to make a real difference to their local neighbourhood.

“The group did a fantastic job of promoting the events, getting volunteers on board and generally raising awareness of the responsible and correct ways to dispose of household waste.”

The Lord Mayor Cllr Abdul Osman will present the group with the Honoured Citizen Award tomorrow (Friday 22 February) at 3pm, at Leicester Town Hall.
