Search is on for city’s sporting heroes 2016

PEOPLE are being given the chance to nominate their favourite local sporting heroes in an annual awards scheme that celebrates the best of the city’s talents.

Following another glorious year of sporting success, the Leicester City Sports & Physical Activity Awards 2016 are now open for nominations.

The awards recognise the sporting achievements of city-based teams – such as Premier League champions Leicester City and the high-flying Leicester Riders – as well as individuals, including the many dedicated volunteers who give up their spare time to coach others or work behind the scenes to help a club run smoothly.

Assistant city mayor for culture, leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: “The search is now on to find nominations for this year’s Sports & Physical Activity Awards.

“After another memorable year of sport, these awards provide a fantastic opportunity for the local community to recognise the achievements of the many inspirational sportsmen and women at every level of sport in Leicester.” 

There are 12 categories in this year’s awards scheme:

• Sports Person of the Year

• Young Sports Person of the Year

• Disabled Sports Person of the Year

• Young Disabled Sports Person of the Year

• Coach of the Year

• Volunteer of the Year

• Young Volunteer of the Year

• Community Club of the Year

• Team of the Year

• Award for Lifelong Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity in Leicester City

• Heart Smart Award

• The Get Active Award

To be eligible for nomination, nominees must have recorded their achievements between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 and must live, attend school, volunteer, or represent a club within the city boundaries of Leicester. 

Nominations can be made online at www.leicester.gov.uk

Nominations can also be submitted by filling in a form, available from any of the city’s sports centres, leisure centres and libraries. Application forms should be sent to: Sports Regeneration, Braunstone Leisure Centre, Hamelin Road, Leicester LE3 1JN.

Entries must be received by 5pm on 14 November.

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a presentation evening to celebrate their accomplishments. This year’s event will take place at City Hall on 8 December.
