Demolition work complete at Hinckley Road

DEMOLITION work at the site of the explosion on Hinckley Road is now complete and work to reopen the affected stretch of road is under way.

Leicester City Council is aiming to reopen the offside inbound lane of Hinckley Road to traffic by the end of this week. The nearside lane and left turn from Woodville Road, along with the junctions of Mostyn Street and Carlisle Street, will remain closed while safety work continues at the site.

The security cordon will be reduced but this will need to remain in place while essential utilities work is carried out. This will involve installing new cabling and pipes in the area, including to all affected properties.

Repairs to the pavement will then be carried out and safety hoardings put up before the footpath and road can be reopened in full.

Leicester City Council’s building safety team has now completed work to survey the site and remove any remaining unsafe structures and, where necessary, fill in the basements of the demolished buildings.

Miranda Cannon, city council director and chair of the community recovery group, said: “This has been a terrible incident and we know the impact has been felt deeply by many people in the local area.

“We are doing all we can to support the local community in recovering from the upset and disruption caused and bringing the road back into use will be a big part of that.

“Our main concern since the police and fire investigation concluded has been to ensure the site and buildings are safe. That work is now complete and our focus can turn to reopening the road while we continue to support local residents and businesses in recovering from this tragic event.”

A local community recovery committee is being set up by local ward councillors, with the support of the city council. This will help guide the community recovery efforts over the coming weeks and months.

The temporary residents’ support point will close today (21 Mar).
