Dedicated dad sets up new group

Published on Monday, August 1, 2016

A DEDICATED dad is working with Leicester Libraries to run a special group for other dads and their toddlers.

Vandy Rogers, 31, of Stocking Farm, desperately wanted to spend some special bonding time with his 18-month-old son, Beau.

The full-time accountant looked around for local dad groups but couldn't find a single one. So, whilst volunteering at his local library, he approached staff to see if he could use the community venue to set up his own group.

With the support of the city's library service, SaturDADs was born and is now going from strength to strength.

Started back in May at Beaumont Leys Library, Vandy has organised specially themed sessions on the first Saturday of every month ever since.

There was a football-themed session to celebrate LCFC winning the title, which included a football-based storytime. In addition, Vandy has put on a session based around animals and a teddy bears picnic. He even did a special tooth brushing and healthy food event.

Vandy, who also volunteers as a football coach for an under twos group and is currently studying to be a chartered accountant, said: "I really wanted to spend some quality bonding time with my son but couldn't find any groups around for like-minded dads.

"The library service and the local Children, Young People and Family centre  have been great and really supportive of the group. It's grown really quickly and is becoming a little community.

"It's a great way to spend time with your children and also meet a support network of other dads."

Paul Gobey, area development manager for neighbourhood services at Leicester City Council, has volunteered his time to the group as their resident storyteller.

Paul said: "Vandy is a great guy and an inspirational dad. Although he already has a busy life at work, studying and with his family, he is determined to encourage fellow Dads to be involved in their children’s lives.

"He especially encourages this through language, stories and play - he knows it is the time to bond and play together that is so important. SaturDADs, through Vandy’s commitment, creates that opportunity local dads."

The group runs on the first Saturday of every month at Beaumont Leys Library, from 10am until 11.30am. It is aimed at dads and their children, from 0 to 5.

The next group will take place this Saturday (August 6th.
