Dentists get new ‘quality mark’ for backing oral health campaign

DENTISTS who are working closely with the city council to improve oral health in Leicester are being accredited with a new ‘quality mark’ of excellence.
Three dental practices in the city will become the first to receive Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles accreditation at a celebration event at City Hall next week (Wed 12 Oct).
The James Cooil Dental Suite, Fosse Dental Care and Moti Smile Design Centre will all receive their accreditation at the event, in front of up to 120 dentists and dental staff from across the city.
The free event will also allow dentists to share knowledge and continue their professional development on the topic of dental health prevention.
Deputy city mayor Cllr Rory Palmer, who chairs Leicester’s health and wellbeing board, will open the event. He said: “Our Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles campaign has been really successful. We’ve made significant improvements to children’s dental health, with Public Health England figures showing an eight per cent reduction in tooth decay from 2011/12 to 2014/15.
“We know there are still challenges ahead, but we’re confident we can make further improvements, thanks to our close working relationship with dentists and other partners, including NHS England and Health Education England.
“This event is another step in our long-term commitment to improving dental health in Leicester. We’ll be encouraging more dental practices to engage with and support the Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles campaign.”
Accredited dentists have demonstrated that they meet high standards when it comes to promoting good oral health and that they are committed to acting as ‘local champions’ for the Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles campaign.
The Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles campaign features a wide range of initiatives, including free supervised tooth-brushing sessions in nurseries and a bottle swap programme, where parents can swap baby bottles for a free-flow cup, which is better for oral health ad development.
Free oral health packs are also made available for every child aged under five in the city.
