‘Raucous Races’ event celebrates park’s Victorian past

Published on Wednesday, September 7, 2016

PEOPLE can step back in time at a Victorian-themed family fun day on Victoria Park this weekend.

The ‘Raucous Races’ event takes place on Saturday, September 10, as part of the city’s annual Heritage Open Days programme.

Inspired by Victoria Park’s use as a racecourse in the 1800s, there will be a variety of performances and activities led by a cast of costumed characters. Visitors can enjoy tea in fine china in the pop-up Victorian tea room, listen to a live brass band, peruse stalls and have their photo taken in the Victorian photo booth.

Children can also have a go on the ‘horseyhopper’ obstacle race, get creative with arts and crafts and enjoy storytelling and shadow puppet theatre along with other games and activities.

The free event runs from 12noon-4pm, close to the War Memorial.

It forms part of the Story of Parks project, a Heritage Lottery Fund and Leicester City Council project which looks to engage people with the history of their local green spaces.
