Events to celebrate Leicester’s Story of Parks
Published on Thursday, August 3, 2017
A SERIES of events to help people step back in time and discover Leicester’s Story of Parks gets underway this month.
A free training session for budding park historians will take place at The Record Office of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland on Tuesday 8 August. A local historian will give an introduction to using the resources at the record office and provide tips on how to discover the hidden histories of Leicester’s parks.
The session runs from 10am and is free to attend, but people will need to bring appropriate ID to register with the record office.
Training in audio recording, sound editing and interview skills is also being offered to anyone interested in creating an oral history about a local park. The free training will take place at The East Midlands Oral History Archive, 1 Salisbury Road, on Tuesday 15 August from 5pm to 7pm.
A play inspired by the work of Edwin Lutyens and his war memorial on Victoria Park will make its return to The Y later this month.
Commissioned as an original piece for the Story of Parks project and now in its second year, ‘The Finest Ruin’ is set at the arch of Remembrance and explores how the renowned architect's memorials helped to shape the lives of two women with very different backgrounds.
The first performance will take place on Friday 25 August at 7.30pm, with two further shows on Saturday 26 August, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are free to book and members of the audience will be invited to pay what they like on exit.

To round off the month of activities, a historically themed family fun day will be held at Abbey Park on Saturday 27 August.
Visitors can take part in medieval sports, try to unravel the Monk’s Murder Mystery and discover who killed Cardinal Wolsey, or enjoy the traditional circus, magic and puppet shows. There will also be live music, face painting and refreshments on offer.
The free event runs from 12noon until 4pm.
The Story of Parks is a Heritage Lottery-funded project that aims to record and celebrate the history of Leicester’s parks and the stories and memories of the people who use them.
