LEICESTER’S spectacular Christmas ice rink is rapidly taking shape in the city’s Jubilee Square, ready for the first skaters to glide onto the ice on Saturday (9 December).

Contractors are busy putting the finishing touches to the 30m x 15m real ice rink, hanging up the snowflake decorations and arranging the Christmas trees that will help create a festive atmosphere at the attraction.

Brand new ice skates are already neatly stowed on rows of shelves – and penguin skating aids are lined up, waiting to help younger skaters navigate the ice with confidence.

The ice rink opens to the public at 11am on Saturday and will be open every day – apart from Christmas Day – until Monday 8 January.

Tickets for the timed sessions can be bought in person at the Visit Leicester store on Gallowtree Gate – or online at And from Saturday (9 December), they can also be bought from the ice rink box office that will be based at BBC Radio Leicester, just next to the ice rink.

Skate hire and a 45-minute session on the ice cost £8 for adults and £6.50 for children/concessions at off-peak times (11am-4pm Monday to Friday). Tickets for sessions at all other times cost £9 for adults and £7.50 for children/concessions.

Groups of four or more people will save 10% on standard prices, with a 15% discount available to groups of 11 or more people.

Each session starts on the hour, allowing 15 minutes for people to change in and out of their ice skates and a full 45 minutes on the ice.
