New outdoor gym at Beaumont Park

Published on Tuesday, February 21, 2017

VISITORS to Beaumont Park in Leicester have a new way to get active, now that work to install an outdoor gym has been completed.

The outdoor gym – which is located on the edge of the park close to Tesco and Beaumont Leys library – features eleven pieces of equipment and was installed at a cost of £32,000. It was paid for with public health funding intended to get people more active.

Featuring a range of aerobic, muscle-toning and strength-building activities, the new gym has been designed to encourage novices to take some gentle exercise.

Deputy City Mayor Rory Palmer, who leads on health and wellbeing, said: "Our outdoor gyms are proving very popular with park users of all ages and abilities and we remain committed to rolling the scheme out to more communities over the coming weeks.

"They offer the perfect way to kick-start a more active lifestyle with equipment that is not too challenging for beginners, and yet still appeals to the many people who use parks as part of their regular exercise routines."

The new outdoor was officially opened by Beaumont Leys ward councillors, ahead of an introductory session for local residents led by a qualified coach.

Cllr Sue Waddington said: “We are very pleased that the new outdoor gym in Beaumont Leys is now open for residents to enjoy.

“The equipment has been chosen to appeal to everyone at all levels of fitness and is free to use. Exercising in the fresh air at the gym is fun and can be fitted into a trip to the shops, so we hope local people will come and have a go.”

Cllr Paul Westley said: “I am delighted with the new gym in our ward and I’m sure our residents will be too. People are already using the new equipment.”

Cllr Hemant Rae Bhatia added: “If early reaction from residents is anything to go by, this new outdoor gym is going to be big hit. A healthy and happy Beaumont Leys is what we strive for."

The Beaumont Park outdoor gym is the latest to be installed by the city council. There are now 20 outdoor gyms in use in Leicester's parks and open spaces, with work on nine more due to be completed over the next two to three months.
