Castle Classic will herald weekend of cycling events

THE Castle Classic cycle race will return to the streets of the city later this summer, as part of the Ride Leicester festival.
Elite cyclists will compete in a fast, flat and challenging 80km, 20-lap race, taking in Mile Straight, the King Power Stadium and a tricky cobbled section outside Leicester Castle.
The race will take place between 10am and 12noon on Sunday 13 August. It is free to watch and televised by Eurosport.
The Castle Classic will attract leading British elite teams, giving spectators a chance to see Olympic, world and national champions taking to the city’s streets for the finale of British Cycling’s Grand Prix Series.
The start and finish point is on Western Boulevard, close to Bede Park, with ample viewing spots along the length of the route. Last year, it’s estimated around 2,500 people watched the Castle Classic and supporting races.
The race heralds a weekend of cycling activities as part of Ride Leicester, the city’s annual festival of all things cycling-related.
The action is preceded by a full programme of Castle Classic support races on Saturday 12 August. These will take place at New College sports village, on the new Leicester Cycle Circuit.
This will include a chance to see the next generation of cyclists in action, with the East Midlands Regional Youth Circuit Championships.
And on Sunday, once the excitement of the elite race is over, everyone in Leicester is invited to join the HSBC City Ride – a new mass family bike ride on traffic-free streets, between the King Power Stadium, Leicester Castle and Leicester Market.
Organised by Leicester City Council, British Cycling and HSBC, the ride will include lots of cycling-related entertainment and activities en route.
Cllr Adam Clarke, assistant city mayor responsible for the environment, said: “The Ride Leicester Festival is a key fixture in a summer of cycling for the city and having this year’s Castle Classic on the same day as the City Ride will be a great way to kick off a two-week celebration of everything to do with cycling.
“It’s also a chance for us to showcase the fantastic new Leicester Cycle Circuit – a 1 kilometre circuit that provides a great opportunity for safe, traffic-free cycling for everyone from elite athletes to young children.
“These events show our commitment to cycling and our determination to invest in making it easier for people to choose to cycle to get around Leicester.
“We want to tackle issues like pollution and congestion, and encouraging more cycling is one way of doing that. It’s sustainable, healthy and fun.”
