Event helps school leavers select apprenticeships

Published on Tuesday, May 2, 2017

AN EVENT in Leicester next week could help local young people on their way to proper training, paid work and a long-term career.

Students in years 11-13 who are planning on leaving school after their exams this summer can find out more about hundreds of apprenticeship opportunities across a wide range of job sectors at a special jobs fair on Tuesday (9 May).

The apprenticeship jobs fair will bring together dozens of employers, including the NHS, Ford & Slater and Taylor Hobson – all of whom are keen to fill apprenticeship vacancies in their businesses.

Those attending the event will be able to talk informally with employers and apprenticeship providers about the opportunities that are available – and they’ll also go home with a personal plan to help them get their job search started.

Leicester City Council’s Apprenticeship Hub manager Tracey Waterfield said: “It can be difficult for young people to know where to start to search for a job – and it’s hard to fit in applying for jobs around exams.

“At our special jobs fair next week, those who want to get into paid employment with training will be able to find out about a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities with local employers.

“There will be lots of useful advice and information on offer, and the chance to sign up for ongoing support throughout the summer from our Apprenticeship Hub.

“School leavers could land themselves a great apprenticeship right away as a result of meeting an employer at this event – and that could be the start of a long-term career.”

Supported by Leicester City Council’s Apprenticeship Hub, the Careers Education Information and Guidance Hub, and Connexions, the apprenticeship fair takes place at Beaumont Leys School on Anstey Lane (LE4 0FL) from 3.30pm–6pm on Tuesday 9 May. Parking is available.

Year 11-13 students in Leicester schools wishing to attend the fair should email, including details of the school they attend, to register for the event. Parents and carers are also welcome to attend.

Further details are available by calling 0116 454 2945.

The city council’s Apprenticeship Hub organises regular events throughout the year to bring would-be apprentices and employers together. Hub100 events allow candidates to be assessed and interviewed on the day, with 100 vacancies available at each event. The next Hub100 event is on Thursday 13 July.
