Search is on to find heroes of sport and physical activity

NOMINATIONS are being sought from the local community for the 2017 Sports and Physical Activity Awards.

If you know a local sports star or dedicated volunteer who helps to keep a club going, now’s the chance to recognise their achievements by nominating them for an award.

The awards, organised by Leicester City Council, will recognise the sporting achievements of teams and individuals across the city. This includes the dedicated volunteers who give up their spare time as coaches, and those unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help clubs run smoothly.

There are eight categories in this year’s awards scheme:

  • Young sportsperson of the year
  • Volunteer of the year
  • Coach of the year
  • Sportsperson of the year
  • Community club of the year
  • The Get Active award for people who have made healthy changes to their lifestyle
  • Disabled sportsperson of the year
  • Lifelong contribution to sport and physical activity in Leicester

Nominees must live, attend school, volunteer or represent a club within the city boundaries. The closing date for nominations is Monday 8 January 2018.

All shortlisted nominees will be invited to a presentation evening at City Hall on Thursday 15 January 2018.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Piara Singh Clair, who leads on culture, leisure and sport, said: “Leicester has a fantastic reputation for sport at all levels, including the grassroots teams and activities that help us to build strong local communities. If you know someone who deserves recognition for their work, who is a rising star or who could just do with a ‘thank you’, please think about nominating them for these awards. The ceremony is always a great event.”

Nominations can be submitted by filling in a form available from any of the city’s leisure centres or libraries.
