City pool to close for major refurbishment

Published on Monday, October 9, 2017

COSSINGTON Street pool is set to close to the public for up to three months while major refurbishment work takes place.

The pool will close from Monday 9 October, and is expected to reopen in January 2018. Other facilities at the centre, including the sports hall and sauna, will remain open during the refurbishment.

Planned refurbishment work includes upgrading the existing changing cubicles which stand on either side of the pool – one of the many period features of the Victorian building. This will be repaired, refurbished and repainted, with new seating and lockers installed. Toilet and shower facilities will be upgraded and new vanity units and hairdryers will be added. New swimsuit dryers will also be introduced.

The pool itself will be re-lined and given a spruce-up, and improvements will be made to the centre’s main reception.

The £200,000 refurbishment programme is being supported with National Lottery funding from Sport England as part of its Swim Local initiative.

Cllr Piara Singh Clair, assistant city mayor for culture, leisure and sport, said: “Cossington Street is a popular pool but was badly in need of refurbishment.

”The generous National Lottery funding from Sport England means we can make some much-needed improvements and help encourage more people to take advantage of this fantastic, historic pool.

“Swimming is fun, affordable and a great way to get active. We want to open that up to even more people and help ensure that swimming continues to thrive at our leisure centres.”

Cossington Street pool opened in the late 1800s and many of its original Victorian features have been preserved. It was the training pool for Jennie Fletcher, a six time English swimming champion who went on to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1912 games in Stockholm as part of the Great Britain 4x100 freestyle relay team. A plaque in her honour is on display at the pool.

All learn-to-swim sessions that currently take place at Cossington Street Sport Centre will be relocated to Aylestone Leisure Centre during the refurbishment works.
