Park and Ride for Diwali Lights switch-on
Published on Tuesday, October 3, 2017
PEOPLE traveling in Leicester this weekend for the city’s Diwali celebrations can take advantage of special Park and Ride services.
Tens of thousands of people are expected at the hugely-popular Diwali Lights switch-on event in Belgrave Road on Sunday, October 8, which regularly attracts about 35,000 people every year to see 6,000 festive lights illuminated.
Special Park and Ride services will be running to ensure visitors can travel safety to and from the spectacular festivities.
Buses will run from Birstall’s Park and Ride site to Abbey Park Road, from 4pm until 7pm, with return journeys departing from Abbey Park Road from 8.15pm to 10pm.
Car parking in Belgrave itself will be very limited during the event.
The nearest car park to the Golden Mile is a 24-hour NCP car park at Abbey Street, which is a three-minute walk from bus stops and about a 15 minute-walk from the event.
Other 24-hour parking is available in the city centre at the Haymarket Centre and at Lee Circle, which are both about 15 minutes away on foot.
Blue badge holders will be able to use a limited number of car park spaces at the B&M site, accessed off Belgrave Circle.
There is also free bike and buggy parking, located next to the 110-ft Wheel of Light, near Belgrave Circle.
As part of the event and preparations, there will be a number of road closures and parking restrictions in the surrounding area during the Sunday daytime and evening.
Belgrave Road will be closed to all traffic between Belgrave Circle and Garfield Street from 10am, with the rest of Belgrave Road closing completely from 5pm until about 9.30pm when the festivities have ended.
In addition, there will be clearly marked parking restrictions on some side roads which are being kept clear for emergency vehicles.
