Time to apply for your child’s primary or secondary school place
Published on Thursday, September 7, 2017
FAMILIES in Leicester who have children due to start primary, junior or secondary school next year can apply for school places from Monday (11 Sept).
Applications for the 2018-19 academic year will open online at www.leicester.gov.uk/admissions.
All children in the city who were born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 can take up a full-time place to start at a primary or infant school from August 2018. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2018.
Parents and carers of children who are due to transfer to a junior school will also need to apply by 15 January 2018.
Even if your child has been attending school part-time, in a nursery or F1 class, you will still need to apply for a full-time place.
For secondary school places, parents can apply from Monday (11 Sept) and the deadline is 31 October 2017.
Any applications for school places received after these dates will be treated as late, and will only be dealt with after all the on-time applications.
Cllr Sarah Russell, assistant city mayor responsible for children, young people and schools, said: “We know starting or moving schools can be an anxious time for families, so we try to make the application process as straightforward as possible.
“I’d advise anyone who needs to apply to take time to visit your local schools and to read our guides, which are available on our website from Monday and fully explain the admissions process.
“Everyone gets the chance to put down three schools, and I would advise every applicant to take advantage of this. It’s your best chance of being allocated a place at one of your chosen schools.
“Only putting down one preference does not increase your chances of getting in there.”
The Choice Advice Service, which provides general advice on school admissions, is running a number of support sessions at primary schools for anyone who needs help with applying for a school place. For more information, visit www.choiceadvice.org.uk
Three support sessions for families with primary-age children are also being held at the city council’s customer service centre, in Granby Street. These are on Wednesday 6 December from 10am-12pm, Wednesday 13 December from 1pm-3pm or Wednesday 3 January from 1pm-3pm. Parents can drop in without an appointment and admissions staff will be on hand to help with applying for a school place.
Applicants who live outside of Leicester city will need to apply to the local authority where they pay council tax.
For the current 2017-18 academic year, the city council’s school admissions team dealt with more than 8,700 on-time applications.
Of these, 96% of primary applicants were offered a place at one of their three preferred schools.
At secondary level, 94.3% of applicants got a place at one of their three preferred schools.
Every applicant who applied on time was offered a school place.
