Published on Thursday, April 26, 2018

A FREE event for families who have a child with disabilities or special educational needs will take place in Leicester next month.

The event, called Local Offer Live, will be held at Leicester’s Curve theatre on Tuesday 15 May, from 10am-5pm.

Local Offer Live is an annual event showcasing the services and support available to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and their families or carers.

The event, which is completely free to attend, includes exhibition stands from local services, plus a programme of activities and information sessions.

The idea is to bring to life the Local Offer website, which details support and services at

This year’s activity programme includes workshops and seminars on key topics such as welfare rights, supporting disability, sensory impairments and health matters. Attendees will be able to book onto these sessions for free via the Curve website.

There will also be taster sessions for children, young people and families in arts, craft and dance, plus the chance for visitors to show off their soccer skills at an area run by Leicester City Football Club.

Local Offer Live is supported by Leicester City Council and the NHS. Also involved in the event are organisations including Attenborough Arts, the Turned On Its Head dance company, and disabled children’s charities Contact and Menphys.

Cllr Sarah Russell, deputy city mayor responsible for children, young people and schools, said: “Local Offer Live gives families the chance to find out what help and support is available locally if they have a child with special educational needs or disabilities.

“A wide variety of services will have information stands at the event, and there will also be free workshops that go into more detail about the sort of financial, educational and practical support available.

“Alongside this, taster sessions in dance and the arts will give young people the chance to express themselves and help to demonstrate the important role arts and culture plays in education and family life.”

Curve’s chief executive Chris Stafford and artistic director Nikolai Foster said: “Following the success of last year's event, which won a national industry award, we are delighted to be hosting the third Local Offer Live at Curve. This extraordinary event showcases the very best networks and services available to those with special educational needs and disabilities in our region.

"It is our firm belief that everyone should have access to great art and culture. Accessibility forms a key part of our work at Curve and Local Offer Live is a particularly special moment in our calendar with performances, workshops and activities, as well as stands providing vital information and support.

"In Curve’s tenth year, Local Offer Live is sure to be bigger and better than ever, so do come along and join us!"
