Open Streets monthly event celebrates city’s people-friendly streets

Published on Thursday, April 26, 2018

A NEW monthly event aimed at encouraging people to explore Leicester’s people-friendly streets kicks off this Sunday (29 April).

Open Streets, which will run on the last Sunday of each month, will include guided walks and cycle rides, a cycle market, free bike-fixing service, street food and entertainment, all based around the city’s new Market Square.

This month, the free event will include a street art walking tour led by local urban artist Sam Grubb. The walk, which starts at 11am, will also launch Walk Leicester, the city’s month-long walking festival of guided walks, tours and activities encouraging people to enjoy walking.

This is followed by a street art cycling tour, also led by Sam, starting at 12.30pm. All participants in either the cycling or walking tour will get a free copy of a new 60-page guide to Leicester’s street art.

There’s also entertainment in the square from the Danny Butler show, from 12 noon until 12.30 – this is the BMX show which recently thrilled crowds outside the King Power stadium.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Adam Clarke, who leads on public health and the environment, said: “One of the great things about Leicester is that it is quite a compact city, so you can see and do a lot by travelling only short distances. The best way to do this is on foot or by bike.

“We want to show people just how easy and enjoyable it can be to explore the city’s heritage and culture when you leave the car at home.

“I hope lots of people will enjoy the Open Streets initiative on a regular basis, and particularly for our first event, which will also help to launch the Walk Leicester festival.”

Open Streets will also include guided cycle rides around the city centre, suitable for accompanied children and people on all types of bike.
