Open invitation for local artists to showcase talents

Published on Tuesday, September 4, 2018

THE SEARCH is on to find the paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculptures and craft that will feature in this year’s Open art exhibition in Leicester.

Now in its 29th year, the Open welcomes work from artists living or working in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire or Northamptonshire.

Artists hoping to showcase their work at Open 29 must submit their online applications by Monday 29 October.

A panel of independent judges will then aim to select around 200 of the best works to feature in this year’s Open.

Alongside this, entries are being invited from young artists aged 5 to 19 years.

This year’s exhibition will be held at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery. It opens on Saturday 15 December and will run for seven weeks.

Work featured at the Open will be available for sale – giving members of the public the opportunity to acquire original work at an affordable price.

Assistant city mayor for culture, leisure and sport Cllr Piara Singh Clair said: “The Leicester Open is a wonderful opportunity for talented local artists to showcase their work.

“The annual call for entries attracts some really stunning work from artists based in Leicester and around the East Midlands and I’m sure that this year will be no exception. I’m particularly pleased that children and young people will have the opportunity to take part in this year’s Open.”

Joanna Jones, Leicester City Council’s head of art and museums, said: “We are very proud of our Open exhibition, which showcases the work of talented artists from Leicester and the East Midlands for visitors to enjoy.

“This year’s exhibition will open just in time for Christmas, so it will also be a fantastic opportunity to buy a unique gift.”

Entry fees for the Open 29 exhibition are £10 for one piece of work, £16 for two and £20 for three pieces by the same artist. There are concessions for NUS cardholders and artists aged 60 and over. Entries for the young artists categories will be free of charge.

Confirmed sponsors for this year’s Open exhibition include Leicester Print Workshop, LCB Depot, De Montfort Hall, Art House, John E Wright, Soft Touch Arts, City of Leicester Museums’ Trust and The Spark Arts for Children.
