YOU don’t need to know your merengue from your mambo, or your samba from your salsa – but a sense of rhythm might help you get the most out of Leicester Market’s new Friday night zumba classes.

Starting on Friday (10 August), the free outdoor classes on the new market square aim to give people an after-work work-out that will set them up for the weekend.

Certified zumba instructor Leona Knott will lead the sessions, which start at 5.15pm every Friday.

Markets development officer Adam Piotrowski said: “The introduction of free zumba classes on the new market square follows the success of our free Tai Chi sessions, which we’ve been running for a while now.

“We’re hoping that people will like the idea of kick-starting their weekend with some fun – and free – aerobic exercise to mark the end of the working week.”

Featuring aerobic moves, dance steps, squats and lunges – all performed to high-energy music – the zumba classes are suitable for all ages and all abilities. There’s no need to book in advance – just turn up in trainers and suitable clothing.

The sessions run from 5.15pm to 6pm every Friday, weather permitting.

For those preferring less energetic exercise, the regular Tai Chi sessions continue every Saturday – weather permitting – at 9am.
