Leicester young people share their views with world leaders

YOUNG people from Leicester have been telling world leaders about the issues they want to see addressed at a forthcoming international meeting.
As part of a project being run by the UK Government, members of Leicester’s Young People’s Council were filmed talking about the topics they would like to see discussed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018, which will be held in London and Windsor in April.
The meeting will host leaders from across the 52 Commonwealth nations, who will be looking at how they can work together to create a better future for all their citizens – particularly young people.
Among the issues raised by Leicester young people were help for refugees and support for children with disabilities.
In one of the short films Brahmpreet, 17, says she wants to see a focus on access to education, because “education can help to eliminate poverty.”
Hoor, 17, says she wants to see young people more involved in decision-making in their countries, while Dibjeet, 16, says she would like to see personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) in schools made compulsory, because “it helps to make you a better person.”
Gary, 16, talks about the importance of giving young people a voice and his pride in representing young people from Leicester.
Cllr Sarah Russell, deputy city mayor with responsibility for young people, said: “We have a very active Young People’s Council in Leicester and it’s great to see our young people singled out to take part in projects like this one.
“They’re able to talk with authority about the sorts of issues they’d like to see discussed by world leaders, because they’re growing up in a diverse, multicultural city.
“This allows them to recognise the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and to make considered and intelligent contributions to global debate. These young people are a credit to Leicester.”
