Race for Life Half Marathon to take to city’s streets this weekend
Published on Thursday, July 5, 2018
THOUSANDS of runners will be taking to Leicester’s streets this Sunday (July 8) for the first ever Race for Life Half Marathon race.
The half marathon event is being organized by Cancer Research UK, as is taking place along with smaller 5K and 10K Race for Life events on the same day.
About 2,500 runners are expected to take part across the day, with about 200 taking part in the half marathon, which will be setting off from Victoria Park at 9.15am.
The route will take them down New Walk, into the city centre and out to Castle Gardens, from where runners will follow the canal towpath to Abbey Park.
Returning to the city centre, the race will use the underpass beneath St Margarets Way towards Abbey Gate and Frog Island, via Bassett Street and Dunton Street, before entering Rally Park.
Runners will then retrace their steps through the city centre and New Walk to finish the race at Victoria Park.
Amy Hall, area event manager at Cancer Research UK, said: “We are really looking forward the inaugural 2018 Race for Life Half Marathon and would love to see you all come out and support our runners.
“However, we have to put the safety of our runners first, and we need to make sure that the roads are safe while they run through.
“We realise that local people do have other commitments so we have done our very best to accommodate their needs and ensure that the city is still accessible on the day of the race.”
Race marshals will manually stop the traffic temporarily to allow the runners to cross Granville Road, University Road, De Montfort Street, and Welford Place as the race passes, between 9am and 3pm.
Traffic will also be temporarily halted to allow runners to cross Millstone Lane, Horsefair Street, Friars Lane and Market Place.
There will be no access to St Nicholas Circle from the Southgates slip road, with diversions in place between 9.30am and 3pm.
Marshals will control access on Woodgate and Bassett Street between 9am and 3pm.
The race is expected to raise about £188,000 for life-saving cancer research.
The 5k and 10k Race for Life events, which have taken place in Leicester for more than 20 years, are also taking place within Victoria Park on the same day. The 10k race begins at 9.30am, with the 5k starting at 11.30.
