Women try out construction trades

Published on Thursday, March 29, 2018

MORE than 140 women are taking part in taster courses over the Easter holidays to try out craft trades such as plumbing, plastering, electrics and carpentry.

The courses, which are run by Leicester City Council, are open to women aged 15 and over and take place in specialist workshop classrooms at Leicester College.

They are aimed at introducing women to possible career paths they might not have considered before.

The courses are taught by qualified tradeswomen, many of whom themselves started out trying craft trades at a taster course.

They went on to join the city council’s craft trades apprenticeship scheme, and completed a five-year apprenticeship with the city council to become qualified technicians in the city council’s housing department.

Nicola Jones from the Women In Construction team said: “We’ve run these free courses every year since 2000 and they’ve always been really popular. It’s a chance for women to try out trades they might never have tried before. If they like it, there’s the chance to apply for an apprenticeship – it could be the start of a whole new career.”

Cllr Andy Connelly, assistant city mayor responsible for housing, said: “These courses could be the first step on a journey to becoming a craft engineer for our housing department, working to help maintain our stock of 21,000 council houses.

“We’re keen to encourage more women to consider a career in this area, and we’re pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to local women.”

The courses run from 26th March 2018 until 6th April 2018, excluding Good Friday and Easter Monday.

There are sessions covering plumbing, tiling, electrics, bricklaying, plastering, carpentry and painting and decorating. All these sessions are running each day, so women who want to come along can choose what skills they want to try, and if there are spaces, they will be able to have a go.

To attend, just turn up at the Leicester College’s Freemen’s campus main reception, on Aylestone Road, before 9am, Tuesday to Friday next week (w/c 2 April). Participants will be met on arrival by members of the team and registered on the course at that time.
