Museums go to town for half-term

A POP-UP museum at Leicester’s Highcross shopping centre next week will give people the chance to examine artefacts from Egypt, see memorabilia from the First World War and maybe even shake Darth Vader’s hand.
Leicester City Council’s museums service will take over a vacant unit at the shopping centre to showcase items that will be featuring in some of its exhibitions this year – and to provide some fun, free activities for children on their half-term holiday.
There will be toys and games from the summer Star Wars exhibition, May The Toys Be With You (21 July – 28 October), war memorabilia from the First World War exhibition, Leicester Remembers (29 September to 24 February), and artefacts that will feature in New Walk Museum’s new Egyptian gallery when it opens in October.
Items from the forthcoming Alice Hawkins exhibition – which starts on 27 October – will also be on display.
Children will also be able to create a steam story inspired by the Abbey Pumping Station, dig for treasure as a junior archaeologist, craft a stained-glass window, and make their own teddy bear clock.
A vintage fire engine from the museums’ collection will be stationed on St Peter’s Square on Wednesday only (30 May), while Darth Vader, Princess Leia and other Star Wars’ favourites will be popping in on each day of the event.
Deputy city mayor Cllr Piara Singh Clair said: “We’re taking our museums into Highcross this half-term to show people a tiny proportion of the fascinating items we have in our collections.
“It’s a great way to promote our forthcoming exhibitions and encourage people to visit the city’s museums, so we’re very grateful to Highcross for letting us use this vacant unit.
“There will be lots going on and I hope that families will pop in to our pop-up to enjoy the many free activities we’ve arranged.”
The pop-up museum can be found in the unit next to the post office at Highcross from Tuesday (29 May). It will be open from 10am until 4pm each day until Friday 1 June.
Details of all the events taking place in Leicester’s five museums this summer are listed in a free brochure which is available from all city council venues, while more ideas for half-term activities are listed at visitleicester.info
