FAMILIES in Leicester who have children due to start secondary school next year need to make sure they apply for a place before the deadline on 31 October.

Applications can be made online at - but parents must apply before midnight on Thursday 31 October, or their application will be classed as late.

Late applications are only dealt with after places have been allocated to everyone who applied on time.

Children attending a city school in year 6 should have brought home a ‘key facts’ booklet about secondary school admissions, containing useful information.

Cllr Elly Cutkelvin, assistant city mayor responsible for education, said: “It’s really important to apply on time for your child’s school place. There are guides available on our website that fully explain the admissions process.”

This year, families can list four preferences on their application form, giving them a wider set of choices. Parents are encouraged to use all of their four preferences, as only putting down one school will not increase your chances of getting in there.

Cllr Cutkelvin added: “Also, we strongly recommend including your catchment area school as one of your preferences as your child will usually get priority for a place here. This means your child still has a good chance of being able to attend a local school if you don’t secure a place at any higher preferred schools.”

Residents will need to apply to their home local authority for a school place. Those who live in the city will need to apply to Leicester City Council. Those who live in Leicestershire will need to apply to Leicestershire County Council. Regardless of where you live, you can apply for any school in the city, county or further afield.

For the current 2019-20 academic year, the city council’s school admissions team dealt with 9,404 on-time applications to start in reception or year 7.

At secondary level, 92% of applicants got a place at one of their three preferred schools.

Every applicant who applied on time was offered a school place.
