PEOPLE in Leicester will see no changes to their household waste and recycling collections next Friday (8 May) – despite it being a special bank holiday marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Bins and orange recycling bags will be collected as normal, so residents are asked to place their bins and orange bags outside their homes by 7am on their usual collection day.

Garden waste collections will take place as scheduled on the Spring bank holiday on Monday 25 May.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Adam Clarke said: “We’re working closely with our contractor Biffa to keep waste and recycling collections running as usual during these very unusual times.

“Thanks to our hard-working refuse and recycling crews, our collections are currently unaffected by the coronavirus outbreak – but please be aware that we may need to make changes at short notice as this difficult situation continues.

“Any changes to your bin collection, or to any city council service, will be posted on our website, so please go there for all the latest information.”

The city council is aware that with more people staying at home, more items are being thrown away at home, and so it’s reminding residents that there is no limit to how many orange bags can be filled with items for recycling.

All of the following can be recycled in Leicester’s orange bags: paper and card; glass bottles and jars; metal cans, tins, aerosols and foil; cartons; plastic bottles; and plastic packaging, such as tubs and trays.

Food or liquid containers should be emptied and rinsed, before being put in your orange bags for recycling.

Large cardboard boxes from online deliveries should be flattened and placed underneath orange bags for recycling.

People are also reminded that Leicester’s two recycling centres are currently closed, so items such as electronics and DIY materials should be kept at home until the sites re-open.

A full list of all the items that can be recycled in Leicester is available at www.leicester.gov.uk/recycling

Up-to-date information about all city council services affected by the coronavirus is posted on www.leicester.gov.uk/serviceupdates.
