MOTORISTS are being warned of disruption and road closures following a large fire in Leicester city centre.

Fire crews tackled a blaze at a disused building on the corner of Gravel Street and Church Gate, near to St Margaret’s Bus Station, on Tuesday, October 4.

Gravel Street and Church Gate remain closed to traffic, but the city's inner ring road is open.

St Margaret’s Bus Station, which is nearby, was not damaged by the fire, and partially reopened at 12noon on Wednesday, October 5.

Some buses are still being diverted and temporary bus stops relocated into neighbouring streets.

The following services are running, but will not go to or from St Margaret’s bus station until Church Gate and Gravel Street reopen;

  • All Vectare Services
  • 84 (Arriva)  Charles Street stand CA
  • 85 (Arriva) Charles Street stand CA
  • 126 (Arriva) Belgrave Gate stand BF
  • 127 (Arriva) Belgrave Gate stand BF
  • X6 (Arriva) Charles Street stand CJ

All other buses will return to the bus station.

In addition, the following services will not be serving Causeway Lane, but will serve the bus station;

  • 152 (Arriva)
  • 153 (Arriva)

All the bus stops in Savoy Street will also remain suspended until Church Gate and Gravel Street reopen.

Bus operators are posting updates on service disruption to passengers via their own social media channels.

Leicester City Council is working closely with emergency services on site on contingency plans to enable access to and from businesses where needed. Diversion signs and illuminated Variable Message Signs are in place in the surrounding area diverting non-essential traffic away from the site.

Regular traffic and travel updates are available from the city council via @Leicester_News and from Area Traffic Control via @ATCLeicester.
