WORK is under way to create a new section of walking and cycling track in Aylestone Meadows that will form part of the National Cycle Network.
The improvements will see a new 3.5 metre wide track installed on land behind Kingsway, off Narborough Road South.
The new route will connect to the existing track off Braunstone Lane East – which forms part of Route Six of the National Cycle Network – which is also being widened and resurfaced.
The scheme will create a smoother surface for walkers and cyclists on what is a well-used route connecting Braunstone Town to the Great Central Way and the city centre. It is part of the wider Transforming Cities Great Central Way works, which sees improvements connecting New Lubbesthorpe to the city.
Leicester City Council is working in partnership with walking and cycling charity Sustrans – the custodians of the National Cycle Network – to deliver the scheme.
Work is expected to take about 16 weeks to complete. During the works, some footway closures will be needed between 7.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and alternative routes will be signposted.
The scheme will cost £498,000 and is funded as part of an award agreement from the Department of Transport to Sustrans. The funding has been allocated as part of the charity’s Paths for Everyone project to improve the National Cycle Network.
Leicester Deputy City Mayor for climate, economy and culture, Cllr Adam Clarke, said: “This is a well-used route providing an important part of the cycling and walking network connecting the city centre to outer parts of the city.
“These improvements will create more space and a better surface for people to use, to create a high-quality link with the existing Great Central Way and keyworker corridor cycle lane works at Braunstone Lane East.”
