TOWN HALL Square will be transformed into a haven of play next Wednesday (7 August) to mark National Playday.

Hula hoops, skipping, and creative play sessions will all be on offer, as well as the chance to hook a duck in the Town Hall Square fountain.

Leicester Libraries’ Bookbus will be in the square, hosting regular storytelling sessions, and there will be baby stay and play activities for the youngest visitors.

The fun takes place from 11am-3pm and is part of the city council’s Get Up and Go! initiative, which offers free, active fun for children and families at throughout the summer holidays.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Sarah Russell said: “We’re proud to support National Playday with an annual celebration here in Leicester, and the Town Hall Square event forms part of the regular playdays we hold at children’s centres and other venues across the city all through the summer.

“National Playday recognises the importance and value of play in children’s learning and development and we share those values. The activities on offer help children to get creative, keep active and use their imagination, and it’s always great to see how many families come along and enjoy taking some time out to play.”

All activities are free and no booking is required, you can just turn up.

Later in the summer holidays, on Wednesday 21 August, Victoria Park will host a Get up and Go! extravaganza from 11am-3pm. Activities will include zorbes, a climbing wall, creative play, ukelele workshop, youth village and information stands.

And children and families looking for more free activities can still join the Marvellous Makers summer reading challenge – just visit your local library three times before 15 September and read at least six books to complete the challenge, earning rewards along the way. You can also borrow books online from the library’s ebook or eAudiobook collections.
