Road resurfacing to take place

TWO roads to the east of the city are being resurfaced as part of the city council’s ongoing programme of repairs.

The work is being carried out where road surfaces have become pitted, cracked or broken over time, due to wear and tear caused by traffic and the effects of winter weather.

Both roads will be closed while repairs are carried out, with parking restrictions and diversions in place.

Uppingham Road – at its junction with Scraptoft Lane, and including part of Scraptoft Lane – will be resurfaced in a £132,000 scheme starting on Saturday 17 August. The repairs will take five days, during which time a diversion will be in place along Coleman Road, Wicklow Drive and Goodwood Road.

A £78,000 repair programme will be carried out on the east side only of The Portwey from Thursday 22 August for three days. Traffic will be diverted via Hastings Road, Overton Road and Uppingham Road.

Both of the schemes are funded from the council’s annual highways maintenance budget, which saw a £380,000 package of resurfacing work carried out in local neighbourhoods last month (Jul), and will see at least £3.26m invested in the highway network and maintenance activities this year.

Leicester City Council’s director of highways, Martin Fletcher, said: “Traffic and weather have a huge impact on the city’s road surfaces. Our ongoing programme of maintenance and repairs will help to ensure that our roads remain able to handle the demands that are placed on them for years to come.

“We always aim to keep disruption to a minimum while works are carried out, and thank people for their patience and understanding while we do so.”
