THERE’S a chance to explore some of Leicester’s most popular historic buildings next week, with the return of Heritage Sundays.
An hour-long guided tour at 11am on Sunday 30 June will bring to life the history of Leicester’s Magazine – the 15th century stone building that originally formed the gateway to the religious precinct at the Newarke and later became a munitions store during the English Civil War.
With many steps to climb, the tour isn’t suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues.
Opening its doors for a guided tour at 12.30pm on Sunday 30 June is the Great Hall at Leicester Castle.
Built in the 12th century, the timber-framed Great Hall hosted many illustrious guests, including King Richard III, before becoming a criminal court in Victorian times.
The final guided tour will reveal more about St Mary de Castro (pictured) – the medieval church that was founded as a chapel to serve Leicester Castle. A local history expert will lead the tour at 2pm on Sunday 30 June.
Each tour will last one hour and will be led by an experienced guide.
Tickets for each tour are £6 (£5 for children, students and those aged 60 and over) and should be booked in advance at leicestermuseums.org or by calling Newarke Houses Museum on 0116 225 4980.
Heritage Sundays take place on the last Sunday of the month, with further opportunities to join these guided tours on Sunday 28 July, Sunday 25 August and Sunday 27 October.
