A NEW temporary public car park is now open in Highfields, to help ease parking pressures in the area.
Leicester City Council has built the car park on the site of the former Goscote House residential tower block, which was demolished in 2023.
The car park will operate for an initial period of three years, while the city council considers options for the long-term use of the site.
The surface level car park offers 35 spaces on a pay and display basis, charged at a rate of £1 per hour. Of the 35 spaces, two will be designated for disabled parking. Blue badge holders will also be able to park for free.
Access to the new car park is via Willow Court, with drivers exiting onto Moon Close.
The new car park – which will be open 24hrs a day, seven days a week – is intended to help ease local parking pressures within the immediate area for local, organisations and residents, with St Peter’s Health Centre located directly across the road.
City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “There is no doubt that this patch of land has long-term strategic importance, and we need to carefully consider options for its future development to ensure they offer maximum benefit to the area and wider community.
“In the meantime, by creating this temporary car park we can help ease immediate parking pressures in the area and for important nearby organisations like the health centre.”
