GREEN Libraries Week is coming to Leicester, featuring everything from poetry and author talks to energy advice and craft activities – and it’s all free.
The week is a national initiative highlighting the diverse range of activities that take place at libraries up and down the country. This year’s Libraries Week has a focus on climate and sustainability and runs from 7-13 October.
During the week, Leicester Libraries will host a fascinating talk on why we travel by award-winning journalist, broadcaster and author Ash Bhardwaj (pictured). Ash will be visiting Leicester’s Central Library on Thursday 10 October.
There is an opportunity to find out about conservation and volunteering with Leicester Environmental Volunteers at Hamilton Library on Tuesday 8 October; and energy advice drop-in sessions will be taking place at Leicester’s Central Library on Monday 7, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 October, from 11am-1pm.
Leicester Adult Education will be offering free taster sessions and learning activities at city libraries throughout the week. Learn more about online safety and digital skills, try out an English lesson for speakers of other languages, or get advice on how to save money on your utility bills.
Craft and wellbeing activities will also be on offer, with sessions including introductions to watercolour painting, crochet and quilling.
Everything is free, but spaces may be limited, so booking is advised. To book, call or drop in to your local library.
Assistant city mayor for neighbourhood services Cllr Vi Dempster said: “Libraries Week is an opportunity for people to discover all that their local library has to offer.
“We’re very proud of our libraries in Leicester. They are real community hubs, and we know how much people value the wide range of services they provide.
“Activities are taking on a ‘green’ theme, which gives us a great chance to show people how easy it can be to live more sustainably. I hope people will really enjoy getting involved with Green Libraries Week.”
