PEOPLE in Leicester are being invited to get active at their local leisure centre next week – and it won’t cost them a penny.

All seven city council-run Active Leicester leisure centres will be marking National Fitness Day (Wednesday 18 September) with a week of free classes, gym sessions and swims that starts on Monday (16 September) and continues until Sunday 22 September.

An online timetable – which is also available at participating leisure centres – lists dozens of activities that people can enjoy free of charge, including Pilates sessions, training with kettlebells, group cycling, Zumba, HIIT classes, yoga and circuits.

As well as free swims and gym sessions, the city council is also inviting people to enjoy a free round of pitch & putt at its Humberstone Heights golf course.

The full programme of activities can be found here

Assistant city mayor Cllr Vi Dempster said: “For anyone wanting to increase their activity levels, National Fitness Day is a great opportunity to take a step towards a healthier lifestyle.

“If you’ve never used our leisure centres before, or it’s been a while since your last visit, take a look at the wide range of free sessions taking place at a site near you and have a go at something new – whether it’s step aerobics, group cycling or a gentle round of pitch & putt.

“And if you enjoy your free sessions, and are ready to build regular exercise into your daily or weekly routine, we’re offering a discount on memberships in September to support you on your fitness journey.”

People wishing to use the gym or play pitch & putt during National Fitness Week don’t need to book, and swimmers are free to join the advertised swimming sessions, but anyone wishing to join an exercise class is advised to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Places can be booked online, by phone or in person. Terms and conditions apply. To find contact details for your local leisure centre, visit the Active Leicester webpage.

The free sessions will run from Monday (16 September) until Sunday 22 September at Aylestone Leisure Centre, Braunstone Leisure Centre, Cossington Street Sports Centre, Evington Leisure Centre, Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, New Parks Leisure Centre, Spence Street Sports Centre and Humberstone Heights Golf Course.

New members signing up for a health & fitness membership during September will receive a 50% discount on their first month’s membership.
