LEICESTER’S summer celebration of people-friendly streets continues this weekend, with the return of the Graffwerk Street Art Jam as part of Open Streets.
Leicester Open Streets is a series of pop-up mini-festivals that take place of the last Sunday of the month, from May to September, at locations across the city centre.
The free, family friendly events are organised by Leicester City Council to show how it easy it is to walk, wheel, or cycle in and around the city.
This Sunday’s Open Streets event, on 31 August, is being hosted in partnership with local street art collective Graffwerk. Visitors can join the street art jam at Graffwerk HQ – at 2 Jarvis Street in the Waterside area – from 1-4pm.
It follows the success of their first event earlier this summer which was attended by over 2,000 people.
Activities on offer include live street art demonstrations, spray paint workshops, and spray can upcycling sessions to turn everyday objects into unique works of art. There will also be bike fix-it workshops and accessible cycling activities from Leicester Wheels 4 All.
The Danny Butler Mountain Bike Show will also be showcasing extreme trials skills and some breathtaking stunts, with music provided by the local Freedem Sound System.
Izzy Hoskins, co-director at Graffwerk, said: “We're really excited to be back working with the team at Open Streets to deliver another street art focused day for all the family. There will plenty to do on the day and we're looking forward to seeing another big crowd.”
Assistant city mayor Cllr Geoff Whittle, who leads on environment and transport, said: “Open Streets is a fantastic series of fun mini-festivals and events that really help to demonstrate how easy it is to get around our city by walking, wheeling or cycling.
“It’s great to see the return of the Street Art Jam and we’re very pleased to working with local street art experts Graffwerk once again.”
This year’s Open Streets programme will wrap up with a heritage-themed family fun on Sunday 28 September.
