A second CCTV camera is due to begin operating on a busy road in Leicester to tackle motorists who illegally park in bus stops.
The new camera will be installed on Evington Road, close to its junction with Conway Road, to cover a bus stop clearway on the inbound side of the road.
It follows the installation of a first enforcement camera on the outbound section of the Road, almost immediately opposite, in May 2025.
The bus stop clearways are frequently used by motorists illegally parking which causes congestion and slows bus journey times on this busy route.
Camera enforcement, along with new lines and signs, will be introduced on the inbound side of Evington Road from Monday 5 January 2026. For the first two weeks, drivers caught using the bus stop clearway will receive warning notices.
Enforcement will begin for real on Monday 19 January from which time fixed penalty notices for £70 will be issued. This will be reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.
In all, the work is costing around £50,000, which includes signs and lines, and will be funded through the council’s transport Improvement capital budget
Once introduced, the new camera enforcement will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Since the introduction of the first enforcement camera on Evington Road, in May 2025, a total of 2,172 fixed penalty notices have been issued for traffic offences in the bus stop clearway. There has been a steep reduction in the number of fixed penalty notices, from 603 in June to just 108 in November.
Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “It’s important that people can rely on buses running on time and keeping bus clearways and bus stops free of other traffic is key to achieving that.
“Drivers illegally parking at busy and well-used bus stops aren’t just causing delays and congestion. They are also potentially putting passengers at risk when they get on and off their buses in the carriageway.
“We’ve already seen that the introduction of enforcement cameras in other areas of the city can be an effective way of tackling problems like this. It is very encouraging to see the positive impact the first camera has had on nuisance and illegal parking on Evington Road. We’re confident that the new camera will also help deter motorists from blocking bus stops on the inbound route of this very busy road.”
A bus stop clearway is part of the carriageway where motorists are not permitted to stop at any time. Camera enforcement of the regulations is permitted under the Traffic Management Act 2004.
All revenue from traffic fines is reinvested in road safety scheme across the city.
