A SECTION of a pathway close to a popular Leicester park is due to be resurfaced as part of a programme of repairs starting next week.
The city council will begin resurfacing and improvement works to the footpaths and ramps approaching the footbridge that crosses the River Soar, close to St Margaret’s Pastures and Abbey Park.
Work will start on Monday 24 November and will require the footbridge and sections of the approaching Grunden and Slater Street footpath to be closed. The resurfacing is expected to take around four weeks to complete. Further work to nearby footpaths is planned for early 2026.
Well signposted pedestrian diversions will be in place during the work.
Riverside Way will be closed at its southern entrance to Abbey Park while the works are being carried out. A diversion will be in place through the park and via St Margarets Way during park opening hours only.
Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “This is a well-used footpath that runs alongside St Margaret’s Way and is an important route for pedestrians and cyclists.
“Wear and tear to the pavement surfaces and the ramps up onto the footbridge means repair work is now necessary to help keep it in good shape for years to come.
“This does mean the footbridge and nearby paths will be closed while work is carried out, but a short and well signposted diversion will be in place.”
The work will cost around £44,000 and is being paid for through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, which supports walking, wheeling and cycling improvements in the city.
