A HISTORIC canal bridge in Aylestone is to undergo repairs to its road surface from next week.
The Aylestone Old Mill Canal Bridge, which spans the Grand Union Canal close to Aylestone Meadows, will close to traffic and pedestrians while the essential maintenance work is carried out.
Work is due to begin on Wednesday 26 November and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete. This will involve excavating the existing road surface on both approaches to the bridge, laying new concrete foundation slabs and resurfacing.
The work will require the temporary closure of Aylestone Meadows car park. Alternative parking will be available at nearby Canal Street car park.
Well-signposted diversions will be in place during the works, and every effort will be made to allow access to the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists as soon as it is safe to do so.
The canal and towpath beneath the bridge will remain open as normal.
Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “This historic bridge is a well-known feature over this stretch of the canal, and has been well used by people and vehicles for many years.
“Wear and tear mean the condition of the bridge’s road surface is such that repair work is now required, and the bridge will need to close for a few weeks while that is carried out.”
Work will cost about £37,000 and is being funded through the city council’s highways capital maintenance budget.
