WORK to improve road crossing in a residential area of Leicester will get under way from next week.

Leicester City Council is planning to install a new zebra crossing at Ethel Road, in Evington, to help improve pedestrian safety. The busy route is well-used by people visiting the local shops, walking to the bus stops or going to and from the two nearby schools.

Work is due to get underway from Monday (3 Nov) and is expected to take around two weeks to complete.

The road will be closed in one direction from Wakerley Road to Headland Road to allow the work to take place. Well signposted diversion will be in place.

Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “This is part of an ongoing programme of work in neighbourhoods across the city, where people have raised concerns, input ideas or highlighted possible areas for improvement.

“By working with local communities in this way, we are able to invest in highways schemes that make a real difference to the daily lives of residents.”

Installation of the new crossing will cost around £58,000 and is part of a rolling programme of pedestrian crossing improvements across the city.
