PEOPLE in Leicester are being asked to suggest locations for new on-street cycle hangars as part of a pilot scheme.

The city council is planning on installing 10 cycle hangars in residential areas across the city to provide convenient and secure bike parking for people who struggle for space at home.

An online survey has been launched to gauge interest and invite people to suggest possible locations for the new cycle hangars.

Each cycle hangar will be able to store six bicycles and will take up road space roughly equivalent to one parked car.

The new cycle hangars will be solely for the use of residents, and the pilot project is not aimed at business or workplaces.

People will also be asked what they might be prepared to pay to reserve space in a secure cycle hangar close to their home.

The city council has £50,000 of funding earmarked for the pilot scheme, which it aims to roll-out from spring 2026.

Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for transport and environment, said: “We’re pleased to be rolling out this cycle hangar pilot scheme. Secure cycle parking is a key part of encouraging more people to choose cycling for everyday journeys.

“We hope that the new hangars will make it easier for people to store bikes safely and conveniently close to their homes, if available indoor space is limited. It’s important that we identify the right locations to trial the new cycle hangars and that’s why we’re asking people for their idea and suggestions for where they should go.”

Closing date for responses is Monday 17 November.
