DRIVERS are being advised that major work to refurbish Leicester’s Gleneagles bridge will require the closure of Gleneagles Avenue in both directions for around 14 weeks.

The work will be carried out in two phases starting on 22 September. The first phase will include re-waterproofing the bridge deck and road surfacing, repointing of brickwork, concrete repairs and the removal of grass verges over the bridge structure, which will be replaced with concrete.

The second phase will see a number of the concrete carriageway slabs removed and replaced with tarmac.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council’s city highways director said: “The bridge requires major maintenance works to renew parts which are now in poor condition and require improvement.

“Advance warning signs will be erected at both approaches to the bridge before work starts on site. Pedestrian access will be maintained as far as is safely possible, however, there will be restrictions around the areas being worked on”.

The council has advised nearby residents and businesses that it may need to impose temporary parking and loading restrictions along adjacent roads and parking bays to keep traffic flowing and enable material deliveries to the site.

The first phase of works to the bridge and carriageway will run from 22 September to around 5 December. Works to the carriageway will then commence, ending around 29 December.

Signposted diversion routes will be in place for both phases.
