FROM bagels to bubble tea and waffles to wraps – a new booklet sets out the huge range of treats on offer at Leicester city centre’s independent cafes and coffee bars.
The free Taste the Place Cafes booklet is available from the Visit Leicester information centre, and is an ideal gastro-themed guide for anyone taking a trip into the city centre.
With a handy map and more than 75 listings, the booklet shows where to go to find freshly-brewed and roasted coffee, Italian artisan gelato, homemade Ukrainian cakes and traditional afternoon tea.
Among the cafes featured are those in impressive Art Deco buildings, tucked away in cosy corners or even offering views over Roman ruins – as well as places where your purchase can help people experiencing homelessness, support Fairtrade or go towards local charities.
And as well as catering for a wide range of diets, many of the cafes featured reflect Leicester’s cosmopolitan makeup. Among those listed are a Moroccan coffee house, a French patisserie, Turkish and Greek bakeries, a Goan café and a Taiwanese bubble tea venue.
There’s also a vegetarian and vegan Buddhist centre, a Halal brunch spot and plenty of cafes to check out if you like board games, video gaming, arts and cinema.
City centre director Sarah Harrison said: “Leicester has a huge range of independent cafes and bistros ideal for meeting up with friends or taking a shopping break in the city centre. The city’s diversity is reflected in the array of different food and drink choices on offer, with something for everyone.
“Our Taste the Place campaign aims to put Leicester on the map as a gourmet hotspot, and this booklet is a great way of demonstrating just how much we’ve got to offer – as well as providing a handy guide to where to go for some delicious treats.”
The café booklet is available online at the Visit Leicester website. There’s also a similar Taste The Place Restaurants booklet, highlighting Leicester’s global food offerings. Both booklets are available to pick up from the Visit Leicester information centre, inside the King Richard III Centre, 4A St Martins, Leicester LE1 5DB.
