A MILE-LONG stretch of Aylestone Road is to be resurfaced this summer, thanks to Government funding.
The extensive works – which are expected to cost £740,000 – will repair and upgrade the carriageway between Hampshire Road in Aylestone, and Aylestone Road’s junction with Saffron Lane.
Cycleway surfacing will also be renewed.
Work will be carried out in three phases, starting on Saturday 15 August.
For the first phase of works, Aylestone Road will be fully closed in both directions between Richmond Road and Boundary Road from 7am on 15 August until Friday 21 August.
The second phase of works – between Richmond Avenue and Hampshire Road – will be carried out in the evenings. Aylestone Road will be closed in both directions between 7pm and 6am from Monday 24 August until Thursday 3 September. The restrictions will be lifted at weekends.
The final phase – between Boundary Road and Saffron Lane – will also be carried out in the evenings. Work will start on Monday 7 September and continue until Tuesday 15 September, requiring the affected stretch of Aylestone Road to be closed in both directions overnight from 7pm until 6am. During each phase of the works, the main diversion route will be Aylestone Road – Lutterworth Road – Glenhills Way – Saffron Lane – Aylestone Road (and vice versa). Localised diversions will be in place for affected side streets.
Assistant city mayor Cllr Geoff Whittle said: “Thanks to this government funding, we’re able to carry out these extensive resurfacing works on a significant section of Aylestone Road.
“While there will be road closures and disruption to some drivers, it’s clearly important that one of the major routes into the city centre is kept in good condition.
“We will do all we can to ensure that work is completed on schedule and that disruption is kept to a minimum.”
The carriageway resurfacing works on Aylestone Road are funded by the UK Government.
