A NEXT phase of work to revamp an underpass leading to Leicester’s Abbey Park is now under way.

Leicester City Council is carrying out a range of works to improve routes for walkers, wheelers and cyclists at the Abbey Gate underpass, near the award-winning park.

Resurfacing work on the four footpaths leading up to the underpass is due to start from Monday 16 February.

The work, which is expected to take around four weeks to complete, is the latest phase in a series of improvements to help make the route safer and more attractive.

Improvements to street lighting in the area and resurfacing works close to the nearby footbridge have been recently completed.

A final phase of work will see a new artwork on the bridge, due to be carried by local street art collective Graffwerk later in the spring.

A Leicester City Council spokesperson said: “The Abbey Gate improvements are designed to ensure that access to and through the park for pedestrians and cyclists is safe, well lit, and attractive.

"The work will provide a better link for cyclists and pedestrians between the new, improved routes at Woodgate, Waterside and Abbey Gate into Abbey Park and onto the National Cycle Network.”

The £350,000 project is being funded with part of a wider pot of £9.2m provided to the city council by the government.
