WORK to improve a busy road in the north-west of the city, and make it safer for walkers, wheelers and cyclists, is now underway.

Leicester City Council has begun construction of a new off-road cycle lane and improve footpaths on part of Orwell Drive, between its junctions with Bennion Road and Amadis Road.

Work is expected to take up to ten weeks to complete.

During the roadworks, Orwell Drive will be one-way only with a short well-signposted diversion in place. Access to Amadis Road will be maintained throughout the works.

However, planned resurfacing due to take place in February will require the junction at Amadis Road to be closed to traffic for up to one day.

A raised table will also be created on Amadis Road at the junction with Orwell Road to help give priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

This is the latest phase of a programme of work that has seen improvements made to Bennion Road and nearby Anstey Lane, to create a more attractive route for walkers, wheelers and cyclists.

A Leicester City Council spokesperson said: “This latest round of highway improvements will improve this important route for all road users.

“Every effort will be made to minimise disruption while the works are carried out.”

The scheme is expected to cost about £600,000 and will be Government-funded, through the Connecting Leicester programme.
