WORK to prepare a section of Leicester’s busy inner ring road for new measures to control dangerous and inconsiderate parking will get underway next week.

Leicester City Council is set to introduce a new ‘red route’ – or ‘no stopping order’ – on Burleys Way, St Matthews Way and St George’s Way stretch of the A594 Leicester Inner Ring Road to reduce congestion and keep traffic flowing.

The new red route – which will come into effect by early July – will effectively link existing red routes on London Road and the A6 St Margaret's Way, creating one continuous red route along this busy and important part of the city's highway network.

Work to prepare the roads will get underway from Monday 21 June, with hydro blasting to remove the existing double yellow lines. Work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption and is expected to take up to five nights to complete. Some temporary lane restrictions will be required.

Letters have been delivered to nearby homes and businesses to give notice of the forthcoming work, which may be noisy.

The new red route will be marked with red signs, rather than with red lines on the road surface. This is in accordance with red route clearway rules.

Any drivers who are caught stopping in a red route clearway will be given a £70 fine, which would be reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

There are no current plans to install fixed enforcement cameras on the new red route, but the new rules it will be enforceable by the city council’s CCTV-equipped enforcement car.

Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for transport and environment said: “This extension to two existing red routes is being introduced to tackle the problem of cars and lorries stopping illegally along this busy road.

“It will help cut congestion, keep traffic moving more efficiently and improve journey times for all road users on this important route in and out of the city.”

The Traffic Regulation Order required to introduce the new red route on this section of the Leicester Inner Ring Road was formally advertised in spring 2025.
