MOTORISTS are being advised that traffic restrictions will be in place on a busy Leicester Road from next week as traffic calming measures are introduced.
Leicester City Council will be closing parts of Gleneagles Avenue, close to two city schools, for up to three weeks while works are carried out.
The improvements will involve raising the two existing pedestrian crossings onto raised tables to help reduce traffic speeds and improve road safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren.
Resurfacing and other road maintenance works will be carried out at the same time.
Work will begin on Saturday 17 October and will be carried out in two phases to minimise disruption.
In the first phase, part of Gleneagles Avenue, between Lockerbie Avenue and Dunblane Avenue, will be close to traffic for up to eight days.
Work will than move further along Gleneagles Avenue, close to its junction with Peebles Way, where temporary traffic lights will be in place from Sunday 25 October. A short stretch of Gleneagles Road, between Lockerbie Walk and Peebles Way, will then be closed to traffic for two days from Saturday 31 October.
All works are due to be complete by Monday 2 November.
Well signposted diversion will be in place, and access to all businesses and homes will be maintained during the roadworks.
Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport said: “These roadworks are required to enable important road safety improvements to be carried out to this busy route, close to two local schools.
“The work will get underway during the school half term break when traffic is considerably reduced, and we will do all we can to ensure that the scheme is completed as quickly as possible so that the road fully reopens in good time.”
The work is part of a wider £180,000 package of road safety improvements in the area, funded by the UK Government.
This includes the extension of a nearby 20mph zone to take in 27 more roads in the residential area around Herrick Primary School and part of Gleneagles Avenue.
