ESSENTIAL work to support the ongoing transformation of Leicester Market is starting this week, requiring temporary changes to access and parking arrangements in Market Place South.
The work will include the installation of new services including power, drainage, water and CCTV; extending the paving from the market square and setting new kerbs; installing a new line of bollards and new street lighting, and landscaping.
Contractors working on the market redevelopment scheme have moved some of the hoarding around the site hoarding into Market Place South, to create the space needed to continue construction activity.
While this first phase of work is carried out, disabled parking bays on Market Place South have been temporarily suspended, and replacement bays provided outside The Friary public house.
There will be no full road closure at this stage.
A second phase of work is due to begin on 12 October, when Market Place South will be closed to vehicles while further improvements are carried out. This work is expected to complete in March 2027.
The works are essential to ensure the redevelopment of the market square can continue safely and efficiently. Moving the hoarding into Market Place South will give the construction team the space needed to carry out critical works and extend the improvements beyond the market square.
A city council spokesman said: “We understand that the change to access arrangements will cause some inconvenience and we are working closely with traders and businesses to minimise disruption wherever possible. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation while these important works are completed."
